Frannie ne le sait pas encore, mais elle a été choisie par le royaume de l'Enfer qui a dépêché son représentant le plus redoutable - Luc Caine - afin de lui voler son âme. Il arrive au lycée avec son look de bad boy irrésistible, toutes les filles se pâment, et Frannie elle-même en a les sens retournés. Débarque alors Gabe, l'émissaire du Paradis, on s'en doute. Il vient contrecarrer les plans de Luc, fait le joli coeur pour ramener Frannie sur le droit chemin, la jeune fille ne sait plus à quel saint se vouer (ah ah). Bien entendu, elle ignore tout de la face cachée de ses prétendants, et pourtant les indices sont là, sous son nez, à commencer par les patronymes - Gabriel et Lucifer ! Ça ne s'invente pas.

L'héroïne est une catastrophe dans ce livre - Frannie est inconstante et exaspérante, c'est une aguicheuse, purement et simplement, et son cas est franchement désespérant. Dommage que le personnage de Gabe soit si peu mis en valeur, contrairement à Luc, dont on partage le point de vue au même titre que Frannie. Cela donne vite la tendance, même si Gabe vient jouer les trublions, la romance sera centrée sur Frannie et Luc, le couple impossible par excellence. C'est tout cuit ! Notre démon se découvre ainsi des sentiments nouveaux, ce qu'il ressent pour sa cible est contradictoire avec sa mission, c'est ce qui fait le sel du roman. Pour le reste, c'est classique, déjà vu, ça manque de consistance et de classe aussi. Le style n'est pas folichon, j'ai regretté la pauvreté des dialogues, les copines un peu trop vulgaires et l'ambiance cocote-minute car tout le monde est chaud bouillant, ne pense qu'au sexe et ne fait qu'en parler. Bienvenue au festival de la puberté, où les hormones sont en folie et se paient une party d'enfer ! La couverture, déjà... hmm. (La première édition était plus présentable.)

J'adore ! C'est exactement ce que je pense :

Personal Demons is paranormal romance for teens. It is heavy on the romance and rather light on the paranormal, which is probably to be expected. Frannie spends much of her time in this story salivating over either Luc or Gabe, kissing one or the other, or pulling away in anger from one or the other. The supernatural creatures in this book don't sparkle (thank goodness), but everyone's emotions manifest in cinnamon, black pepper, chocolate, ginger, etc. Oh, and something called "summer snow," whatever that's supposed to smell like. Frannie has a deep, dark secret that keeps her from making attachments. Luc and Gabe are gobsmacked by Frannie and can't believe her effect on them.

I like YA novels, and I especially love novels involving the paranormal. Give me a vampire or demon any day of the week and I'm happy. This book, however, never really grabbed me. Frannie was supposed to be so alluring, but her character is not very developed - she's actually quite vacuous. While Luc and Gabe are the new resident hotties, neither one is fleshed out enough to be interesting. Diving head-on into the bad pun, Luc is lukewarm; he doesn't do much other than look hot, fight on occasion and obsess about his physical reaction to Frannie. He's the Big Bad in town, but he's as threatening as a frolicking puppy. Gabe might as well be wallpaper. His job is to comfort and make tea.

I told myself all through this reading that I'm not the target demographic. Would I feel differently about this book if I were, say, a fifteen-year-old girl? Possibly. Frannie is the ultimate damsel in distress. She swoons. She vomits. She needs to be carried quite often. But she knows martial arts and can flip a guy over her shoulder (this last characteristic seems to be thrown in to keep Frannie from being totally helpless). Luc and Gabe step in as every teen girl's dream - two incredibly hot guys who are both infatuated with the same girl. Which will she choose? Will she go all the way or remain chaste? Luc and Frannie think about sex a lot, and the story plays that up to the end. There is definitely an audience out there for this book; I'm just not part of it.
